Legend has it they were invented by a serving girl called Madeleine, who worked for the Duke of Lorraine, from Commercy in France. Not sure how true that is, but it's a fun story!

Aww - that's pretty cute actually, if it is true!

It is cute isn't it! I’ve read that the regular pastry chef was unwell, and she baked the only thing she knew from her grandmother. The Duke of Lorraine loved it so much it took off.

I would love Folklore Feasts Mark, you should do it! And if you ever fancy a folklorey Collab, that would be so fun!

Aw, this post is lovely Mark! Loving the folklore and the thought of those fairies escaping from the soda bread!

Lovely post Mark! Lots of love and hugs for Hiro.

My OH did sourdough and pizza classes and they made a world of difference to his bread making confidence - have fun!

Baking is my relaxation activity. And madeleines and welsh cakes are two of my absolute favs. Madelaines are so easy adaptable - simple browned butter, coated in glaze, or flavoured however you like - all are great. I like to make welsh cakes with a bit of sweet spices added. ButI don't coat them with sugar assoon as they are made: we could never eat them all at once. But toasted lightly and sprinkled with sugar (or cinnmon sugar), with a mug of tea and they are a dream. I don't know why these are not more popular as home bakes.

Thank you, Lisa 🥹 I'll give him a big squeeze from you.

That's great to hear that the classes made a big difference to your OD's bread making! I'm hoping I'll learn enough on the day to finally not have to buy store-bought anymore.

I really need to have a good couple of days playing around with madeleines - especially with you saying how easy they are to adapt. I want to try and make a 'bakewell' variant - I think that would be pretty cool!

Ooo toasted... I've never done that before. I have some plain ones in the cake box - - Might have to give that a go shortly! x

One of the great things about having a dog is exactly as you describe - you end up doing things you might not have, at times you really wouldn't - and life is much better for it

100% Mark - I'd barely do any of the daily walks and adventures if he wasn't around. And definitely learned some qualities that I'll keep long after he's no longer with us :)

Love this! Reminds me of the rustic Italian olive sourdough recipe I adapted from NYC restaurant Il Buco for easy home cooking!
